Here we attempt to answer any questions not answered by other pages on this website. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions below to see if you’re question is answered
WHAT’S A FRESHERS’ BAND?
Freshers’ Week is exclusively for new students of the University of Glasgow and the Freshers’ Band is the only way to gain entry to every event on campus throughout Freshers’ Week 2019. It also gives you priority access to the late night bus service to ensure you get home safe after a night out for those of you living in halls of residence run by the university. Bands cost £45, plus an online booking fee.
WILL THE FRESHERS’ BAND GET ME INTO ALL THE EVENTS OF THE WEEK?
YES!!! The band will get you free entry into all the evening events run by the four student bodies and any club or society associated with the University of Glasgow from 16th -20th September. Events during the day, for example Freshers’ Fair, do not require a band for entry.
HOW MUCH IS A FRESHERS’ BAND?
The 2019 Freshers’ Wristband costs just £45. This is one of the lowest costing Freshers’ Week passes in Scotland and at the University of Glasgow you have four student bodies to choose from rather than one like other universities!
HOW DO I BUY A FRESHERS’ BAND?
You can buy your Freshers’ Wristband online or in person. Full details will be published soon but to buy online you can visit our Register pages – Freshers Band sales will be available soon. To get your wristband in person, you can buy one from SRC Welcome Point at any point during the week.
WHICH ADDRESS SHOULD I PUT ON MY FRESHERS’ BAND REGISTRATION FORM?
We use the address you give us online or on the form only for reference. The important part is your email address where we will be sending your confirmation email. No Freshers’ Bands will be sent though the post.
WHERE DO I COLLECT MY BAND?
This year the Freshers’ Wristband pick up point will be the McIntyre Building, Room 201. There will be helpers and signposts to make sure you find it okay and this information will also be on your Eventbrite confirmation for those who purchase the band online.
WHO CAN COME TO FRESHERS’ WEEK?
First year students at the University of Glasgow — i.e. Freshers only. Be warned you will be asked to prove you are a Glasgow Fresher at some point in the week. Relatives, friends, and students from other universities are unfortunately not allowed.
WILL FRESHERS’ WEEK BE ACCESSIBLE FOR ME?
We strive to make Freshers’ Week accessible for all. For enquiries about disability access and support, please get in touch with the Disability Service at [email protected] or phone 0141 330 5497.
The QMU provides access to the building via a disabled ramp and all floors via the lifts. Their venue has a disabled viewing platform available for booking in advance that can be reserved and QMU staff will arrange to meet the student and escort them to the platform. The QMU also allows free entry to an approved carer if required
The GUU is also accessible on all levels/rooms to those requiring disabled access. Disabled access to the Old building is via the back lane or Beer Bar with a lift that provides access to all floors. The GUU Extension is also served by a lift and provides access between both the extension and the Old Building.
I’M 17 IN SEPTEMBER, CAN I STILL BUY A BAND AND GO TO EVENTS?
YES! Both the QMU and the GUU – the social student bodies – have an arrangement so that 17-year-old Freshers are considered temporary members for the week, so you can still attend all the events.
You should ensure you wear your band and bring photo ID with you. You will then be issued a stamp and won’t be served alcohol in accordance with UK law. Under 18s must enter the building before 10pm. If you leave the building after 10pm, you will not be re-admitted.
When Freshers’ Week is over, 17-year olds can become full members of the Unions to attend weekly events. The SRC runs alcohol-free events so 17-year olds can attend SRC-run events too!
I’M A POSTGRADUATE OR ERASMUS/EXCHANGE STUDENT, CAN I STILL BUY A BAND AND GO TO EVENTS?
YES!!! All students new to Glasgow University this coming academic year are eligible to buy a Freshers’ Band and take part in Freshers’ Week events, including postgraduate students, students transferring from Glasgow International College, exchange students and Erasmus students. If you are new to Glasgow, Freshers’ Week is for you!
Postgraduates can also attend the Postgraduate Welcome Fortnight run by the Gilchrist Postgraduate Club which is a social space dedicated for postgraduates to use and come together with the rest of the postgraduate community. Welcome Fortnight runs from September 16th to 27th and has, in the past, seen events such as live music, pub quizzes, whisky tastings, murder mysteries, and a fabulous drag show!
I WAS IN FIRST YEAR LAST YEAR BUT WITHDREW FROM UNIVERSITY. CAN I GO TO FRESHERS’ WEEK THIS YEAR?
Yes, but only if you have registered to be a first year student again this year.
IS FRESHERS’ WEEK ONLY ABOUT ENTERTAINMENT AND FUN? WHAT ABOUT REGISTRATION AND INDUCTION?
The University manage all registration and inductions and have a section of practical information you need to know for Freshers’ Week – be sure to check out the information on their website as you will need to do important stuff during Freshers’. This includes registering your details with the university and go to a couple of induction lectures for each of your classes.
