Student Bodies

Here at UofG we have 4 student bodies rather just one student association.

Each of these is independent and unique, and each year they all come together to put on Freshers’ Week.

STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Known as the SRC, this student organisation is unique on campus; it exists to represent and protect your rights throughout your time at the university.

As well as representing students on various university committees, the SRC also has GUSRC Volunteering, a long-standing volunteering service boasting a wide variety of opportunities for UofG students to get involved within the Glasgow community, ranging from short-term to long-term placements. Student can also receive confidential advice and information for any kind of problem through the SRC’s Advice Centre. There are many ways to get involved with the SRC; you can host a radio show with Subcity, get involved as a council member or choose from more than 300 clubs and societies to name a few. It also operates the university’s Welcome Point and a second-hand bookshop to save you money on those course textbooks.

During Freshers’ Week, the SRC’s flagship event is the two day Freshers’ Festival. The Festival will be your chance to meet loads of clubs and societies you can get involved in. Local businesses are also there to talk to you so it’s a great event to attend. Look out for the SRC’s Freshers’ Helpers in blue t-shirts throughout the week to ask any more questions.

GLASGOW UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION

As the oldest student body on campus, the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) provides an effective voice to all our student sport members.

At GUSA, we pride ourselves in having something for all students. Whether you are completely new to sport or an elite athlete, we can cater for you! In our partnership with UofG Sport, we work with over 50 affiliated sports clubs as well as delivering free fitness classes and opportunities for recreational sport within our facilities. You can find out more about GUSA and sport at the University by popping into the Stevenson Building or on our Glasgow University Sport website: https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/sport/gusa/

Sport and physical activity have proven to have a huge impact on mental health and academic performance! It’s also an incredible way of making friends for life and really helps bond you to a group that will stick with you throughout your whole UofG experience.

During Freshers’ week, you’ll have the opportunity to find out about all the amazing opportunities we have by attending our club taster sessions. Each club will host a taster session which will allow you to trial the sport for free. Sign up to as many tasters as you can at first before committing to as many clubs as you like. Make sure to approach people at tasters, exchange numbers and you’ll soon be making friends for life. That’s what we’re all about here at GUSA. The world has recently faced one of our biggest challenges with the COVID pandemic but what has been getting us through is community. Nowhere will you find a stronger community than right here at Glasgow and we are ready to welcome you into it!

GUSA helpers will be wearing yellow t-shirts – they’ll let you know the schedule of taster sessions or answer any questions you have on sport at the University.

QUEEN MARGARET UNION

We are the QMU, one of Glasgow’s most famous Venues and one of the two UofG Unions. Over the years we have hosted Nirvana, the Smiths, Queen, Clairo, Troye Sivan, Biffy Clyro and many more.

QMU is Music, it’s a massive part of what we do and who we are! The QMU is one of the social hubs on campus hosting over a hundred events each year, from quizzes, to band nights, to our big Halloween and St Patrick’s day parties. Every week, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourselves, catch up with friends and grab a drink or some food in our many bars, venues and catering outlets.

Over the years our Union has always been a centre for activism and social outreach on campus. Our Charities and Campaigns committee and our mental health campaign, Elephant in the Room campaign host regular fundraisers, creative sessions, discussions and our annual Red Ribbon Ball, a cabaret extravaganza that raises thousands each year for the Terence Higgins Trust. We also support lots of local and international campaigns, from supporting the BLM movement to campaign for increased postgraduate funding.

We’re also home to our very own award-winning magazine qmunicate, written, produced and edited by students. They produce several physical issues a year and publish lots of brilliant student journalism online. If you have a writing bug, make sure to join. You can get involved in everything we do throughout committees and board elections. From learning to mix and light live gigs and writing quizzes, to abseil fundraising or writing for qmunicate. You can even join our board and represent your fellow students. We can’t wait to welcome you to the Union and our community, and we hope you take part in all the opportunities we offer. See you soon!

GLASGOW UNIVERSITY UNION

Glasgow University Union (GUU) is the older of the two social unions on campus and provides a unique array of spaces, events and services for students at the University of Glasgow.
We are one of the UK’s most successful student unions with multiple awards, a packed array of events across term time and a calendar of major events throughout the year. Our unique venue, from the historic setting of the debates chamber and dining rooms through to the cutting-edge equipment of our HIVE nightclub, means we play host to an incredible variety of events every day.
HIVE Thursday is Glasgow’s largest and most successful student night, with 1,500 students packed in on a weekly basis to our basement labyrinth. Throughout the week we are home to all sorts of events, from dance rehearsals and ceilidhs to conventions and University careers fairs, from fight nights and championship dinners to concerts and gigs, with everything else in between. We are a hub for all sorts of activities – a blank canvas for student functions and events with an incredible team on hand to make it all possible.
The Union is run by an elected board of 26 students and alumni, who work closely alongside a highly experienced and professional management team. Our Union kitchen is a staple of campus life, providing everything from a quick lunch through to gala dinners in our period dining rooms. Numerous Union committees work together to organise student events throughout the term, from our famous debates training and acclaimed student magazine through to open mic nights and the legendary beer bar quiz, GUU is the place to have the best times on campus #Wehavemorefun

THE GILCHRIST POSTGRADUATE CLUB

The SRC’s Gilchrist Postgraduate Club is a dedicated space for all postgraduate students at the University of Glasgow — a first of its kind in Scotland. The club provides ample social and study space for postgraduates and staff of the University, allowing both to engage with one another in a comfortable and relaxing environment.

The club also features a bookable seminar room, known as the Wee G which can be hired out by postgraduates for academic and social events; from conferences and workshops or for practicing presentations or group meetings, as well as reading groups or film screenings — the list is endless. Not only that, but it is also free for postgraduates to book the seminar room out. The Gilchrist also has large study booths that have integrated TV screens with AV connections, allowing students to link-up their laptops and watch presentations or videos through the large screen so everyone around the booth can see — perfect for group study sessions before or after a seminar.

The Gilchrist hosts numerous events throughout the year, with a great mix of PG relevant workshops and conferences, everything from “Presenting with Impact” to PGT “Dissertation Creation” classes. Not only are their numerous academic focused events held to help make your degree as diverse and as fascinating as possible, the club also hosts a variety of fun and interesting social events, including cultural events such as a Burns Supper and Chinese New Year, as well as quizzes and film nights. The club is also home for many postgraduate networks and groups, which are great to get involved with.

The club has its own unique cafe that serves the “best coffee on campus” with our Barista tea and coffee making facilities. There is also a wide selection of hot and cold foods, including paninis and nachos that are only available at The Gilchrist. We also have our very own Gilchrist bar with a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, including bottled beers, ciders, wines and spirits.
